After nearly 3 weeks and much searching, we finally found and decided on a place to live off base! The search included six separate visits with housing agents and we saw over 15 homes, walk-ups, and tower apartments. House searching began to feel like a routine...one I didn't mind though. I Love looking at places.
The challenge was deciding.
Our new apartment (yes, you heard right) is 1300 sq ft, the second floor of a 5-story building.
3 bed, 2 bath, living room, decent kitchen and balconies.
Close to the Kadena air base where Gio will go to school, and the school bus even picks him up in front (door-to-door service)! I am happy about that.
The area is nice. A block from the water, playground, skate park, a relaxing lagoon and some popular surf spots. Henry will be able to walk with his board in hand when he goes to search for waves.
But it's going to be a squeeze. We gave up some pretty nice places with more square footage in lieu of location and ample ground-floor storage room for all of Henry's boards and water toys (no garage like our last house). A house with an outdoor private, 1st floor storage is rare to find in Okinawa. But the apartment is nice with a water view! Bonuses include covered parking for both cars, an elevator (many only have stairs), and security entrance (need a code to go inside building, though safety is not a problem in Okinawa).
Views from the street
The car dealership shown below is gone. Construction underway. Possibly a new tower? Boo for noise and eventual loss of ocean view but yay for our soundproof windows hopefully :)
