Around the Base - Okinawa

Still in vagabond mode as we search for a house and cars, we explore the base where we are staying and share a few of our finds.

Japanese Terms We are Practicing:

  • Ohayo gozaimasu "o-hi-o go-zay-mass" (Good Morning)
  • Konnichiwa "con-ee-chee-wa" (Good Afternoon)
  • Arigato Gozaimasu "adi-gato go-zay-mass" (Thank you very much)
  • Hai "hi" (yes)
  • Iie "ee-eh" (no)
  • Sumimasen "soo-me-mass-en" (Excuse Me/Sorry)

 Commissary Shopping

The staple of the island, these beverage vending machines are practically on every corner! Thank goodness because it gets hot here and you find yourself saying "I really need something to drink" very often. They are like boxed genies!
The base commissary has a variety of fruits, but pricier than the states. Apples $2.88/lb

Mangoes $4.99 a pound! Bananas $1.29/lb.

Veggie prices peppers $4.32/lb! Carrots $3.69/lb.

 Craft Class - Ceramic Painting

I enrolled Giovanni in one of the many arts and crafts classes they have here on the air force base.

The Arts & Crafts building is like a miniature Michael's craft store. It hosts several classes each week and sells everything from cake decorating, sewing, art supplies, and even have specialty shops like a woodshop, frameshop, ceramic shop, and more.

Taking some instruction from Mrs. Siggy before getting started on painting.
Mrs Siggy is from Germany and has been on this island for 19 years.
Giovanni followed instructions precisely!

Giovanni was excited to paint the piece of his choice - a cowboy boot!

Focused painter. He chose all the colors for his boot.
Tah-dah! the finished project
King of the throne - Our bed has been confiscated

Goodnight!
